ドローン、自動運転、遠隔教育...... 今や各地に特区──Special Zone──がつくられ、さまざまな技術の運用実験が行われています。しかし、特区とは単に技術の完成度を上げるためのものではありません。あたらしい技術を捉えうるだけの強度を持ったあたらしい文化を育むために、現実の都市空間というゆりかごが必要なのです。
強力な技術によって世界や地球環境そのものを不可逆的に変化させられる現代において、技術を選ぶことと未来を選ぶことは限りなく近くなっています。わたしたちには、技術を通じて未来を想像できるだけのリテラシーが必要とされているのです。かつて都市を意味したpolisからは、politics（政治）とpoliteness（礼節）が生まれました。都市に住まうということは、政治的・文化的態度を引き受けるということにほかならないのです。これからの都市を担う技術の、政治的・文化的側面を思索するためのエリア──Speculative Zone──としてWIRED特区は位置付けられます。

Special Zones for drones, self-driving, and distance learning have been created across Japan to experiment with various technologies. However, special zones are not simply to prove the technology. We need a cradle of real urban space to nurture a new culture that is strong enough to capture new technologies.
Today, when powerful technology can irreversibly change the world and the global environment itself, the choice of technology and the choice of the future are becoming closer and closer to each other. We need to be literate enough to imagine the future through technology. The word polis, which once meant a city, is derived from the words "politics" and "politeness." Living in a city means taking on a political and cultural attitude. The WIRED Speculative Zone is an area for contemplating the social and cultural aspects of the technologies that will drive our cities in the future.
