METACITY CONFERENCE 2019

On January 18 and 19, 2019, we held a conference inviting domestic and international artists, researchers, designers, engineers, entrepreneurs, and a mayor to explore "possible cities" from various perspectives.

The theme was "City As ___".
The first day discussed how urban software, such as art, culture and data, should be recombined with hardware, such as architecture and infrastructure. The second day was devoted to reimagining cities from the perspectives of villages, communities and living systems.
Rapid climate change, drastic population changes at various scales, extreme wealth maldistribution, and technological over-advancements are driving a sea change in the global environment, both natural and man-made. At the same time, the cities we live in have become a physical and institutional "cul-de-sac" for evolution. The 'Red Queen Hypothesis' of biology states, 'To stay in place, you have to keep running. It may be that only our imaginary jumps can reach one step beyond staying.
